Arizona Vehicle Title Guide and FAQs

A clear guide to signing, transferring, and replacing an Arizona vehicle title, including notarization, lienholders, and post-sale requirements.

Signing Your Arizona Vehicle Title

When transferring ownership of a vehicle in Arizona, signatures must be completed correctly to avoid rejection by the Motor Vehicle Division. Use blue or black ink only, and sign your name exactly as it appears on the title.

Common Mistakes That Can Void a Title

  • Signing in the wrong section
  • Signature does not match your driver’s license
  • Cross-outs, erasures, or alterations
  • Use of white-out or correction fluid
  • Rips or tears in the title
  • Tracing over signatures
  • Using pencil or marker instead of ink

Where to Sign an Arizona Title

Arizona issues multiple title formats, and signing requirements depend on which version you have. Some titles require notarization, while others do not.

  • Single-signature titles: Sign on the back of the title in the section labeled “Seller Signature,” typically on the upper-right portion.
  • Titles requiring two seller signatures: Some titles require signatures in both the ownership release section and the odometer certification section.
  • Notarized titles: If notarization is required, all signatures must be completed in the presence of a notary public.

Vehicles with Multiple Owners

If more than one owner appears on the title, the conjunction between names determines who must sign:

  • AND – all owners must sign
  • / – all owners must sign
  • OR – only one owner may sign
  • AND/OR – one or more owners may be required to sign depending on issuance

Titles Showing a Lienholder

If a lienholder is listed on the title, the lien must be released before ownership can be transferred.

  • Lien release signature or stamp on the title
  • Or an original lien release document from the lender

If the Vehicle Owner Is Deceased

  • Joint ownership with survivorship requires a certified death certificate
  • Individual ownership requires proof of authority, such as:
    • Executor or Administrator documentation
    • Surviving spouse paperwork
    • Next-of-kin authorization

If your title is lost, stolen, damaged, or voided, a replacement must be obtained before selling the vehicle.
