Virginia Vehicle Title Guide & FAQs

Virginia title transfers must be completed correctly to avoid delays or rejected paperwork. This guide explains where to sign your title, common mistakes that can void it, and how to replace a lost or damaged Virginia title without issues.

Signing Your Virginia Vehicle Title

Virginia title transfers are straightforward, but signing in the wrong place can delay or void the transfer. Use a blue or black ink pen only and sign your name exactly as it appears on the title.

What Will Void a Virginia Title

  • Signing in the wrong section of the title
  • Signature that does not match the name on the title
  • Cross-outs, erasing, or writing over mistakes
  • Using white-out or correction fluid
  • Rips, tears, or damaged titles
  • Using pencil or marker instead of ink

If any of these issues occur, the Virginia DMV may require a duplicate title before the vehicle can be sold.

Where to Sign a Virginia Title

Sign on the front of the title where it is labeled “Signature(s) of Seller(s)”.

Print your name on the front of the title where it reads “Printed Name(s) of Seller(s)”.

Do not sign anywhere else unless the Virginia DMV specifically instructs you to.

Vehicles with Multiple Owners

If more than one owner appears on the Virginia title, all listed owners must sign in order to complete the title transfer.

Titles Showing a Lienholder

If a lienholder is listed on the title, the lien must be released before ownership can be transferred.

  • Lien release signed directly on the title
  • Or a separate official lien release letter from the lender

Without a lien release, the Virginia DMV will not process the title transfer.

Replacing a Lost or Damaged Virginia Title

If your Virginia title is lost, stolen, damaged, or voided, you must obtain a duplicate title before selling the vehicle.

  • Duplicate title fee is $15
  • Applications can be submitted online, by mail, or in person

Official instructions and forms are available through the Virginia DMV:
