Texas Vehicle Title Guide & FAQs

Texas title transfers must be completed accurately to avoid delays or rejected paperwork. This guide explains where to sign your title, common mistakes that can void it, and how to replace a lost or damaged Texas title without issues.

Signing Your Texas Vehicle Title

Texas title transfers are straightforward, but accuracy matters. Use a blue or black ink pen only and sign your name exactly as it appears on the title. No nicknames and no corrections.

What Will Void a Texas Title

  • Signing with the wrong name or mismatched signature
  • Signing in the wrong section of the title
  • Cross-outs, erasing, or writing over mistakes
  • White-out or correction fluid
  • Rips, tears, or damaged titles
  • Using pencil or marker instead of ink

If any of these occur, the Texas DMV will require a duplicate title before the vehicle can be sold.

Where to Sign a Texas Title

Texas titles require two seller signatures.

First, sign on the front of the title where it reads “Signature of Owner or Agent”.

Next, flip the title over and sign on the back of the title where it reads “Signature of Seller/Agent”.

Print your name on the back where it states “Printed Name (Same as Signature)”.

Vehicles With Multiple Owners

If more than one owner is listed on a Texas title, all owners must sign unless the title specifically allows otherwise.

Titles Showing a Lienholder

If a lienholder appears on the title, the lien must be released before ownership can be transferred.

  • Lien release noted directly on the title
  • Or a separate lien release letter from the lender

Without a lien release, the Texas DMV will not process the transfer.

Texas requires a title to sell a vehicle. If your title is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must apply for a duplicate title before selling.
