Signing Your Nebraska Vehicle Title
Nebraska title transfers are straightforward, but accuracy is critical. Use a blue or black ink pen only and sign your name exactly as it appears on the title. Any mistake can void the title and require a replacement.
What Will Void a Nebraska Title
- Signing in the wrong section
- Signature that does not match the name printed on the title
- Cross-outs, erasing, or writing over mistakes
- White-out or correction fluid
- Rips, tears, or damaged titles
- Using pencil or marker instead of ink
If a title is voided, the Nebraska DMV will require a duplicate title before the vehicle can be sold.

Where to Sign a Nebraska Title
Sign on the front of the title in the lower left section where it is labeled “SIGNATURE OF SELLER”.
Print your name on the front of the title where it reads “PRINTED NAME OF SELLER”.
Do not sign anywhere else unless the Nebraska DMV specifically instructs you to.
Vehicles with Multiple Owners
If more than one owner is listed on the Nebraska title, both owners must sign to complete the transfer.
Titles Showing a Lienholder
If a lienholder appears on the title, the lien must be released before ownership can be transferred.
- Lien release noted directly on the title
- Or a separate lien release letter from the lender
Without a lien release, the Nebraska DMV will not process the title transfer.
Replacing a Lost or Damaged Nebraska Title
If your Nebraska title is lost, stolen, damaged, or voided, you must obtain a duplicate title before selling the vehicle.
- Duplicate titles must be requested through the Nebraska DMV
- All listed owners must sign the duplicate title application
- Processing times and fees apply
Official duplicate title instructions are available here:

Do I Keep My License Plates?
Yes. Nebraska requires sellers to remove their license plates before releasing the vehicle.
Plates stay with the seller and may be transferred to another vehicle or returned according to Nebraska DMV instructions.
