Montana Vehicle Title Guide & FAQs

Montana title transfers must be completed accurately and notarized. This guide explains where to sign your title, what mistakes can void it, and how to replace a lost or damaged Montana title without delays.

Signing Your Montana Vehicle Title

Montana titles must be completed carefully and require notarization. Use a blue or black ink pen only and sign your name exactly as it appears on the title.

What Will Void a Montana Title

  • Signing before you are in front of a Notary Public
  • Signing in the Dealer Reassignment section
  • Name not matching the name printed on the title
  • White-out, cross-outs, or corrections
  • Rips, tears, or damaged titles
  • Using pencil, marker, or colored ink

If a title is voided, Montana Motor Vehicle Services will require a duplicate title before the vehicle can be sold.

Where to Sign a Montana Title

Montana titles must be notarized. Do not sign the title until you are in front of a Notary Public.

Sign on the front of the title where it is labeled “Signature of Seller” or “Signature of First Owner or Agent of Owner (Transferor)”.

Print your name on the front of the title where it reads “Printed Name”. Your printed name must match your signature.

Vehicles with Multiple Owners

Signature requirements depend on how owner names appear on the title:

  • OR – only one owner must sign
  • AND or AND/OR – all owners must sign
  • No conjunction listed – all owners must sign

Titles Showing a Lienholder

If a lienholder is listed on the Montana title, the lien must be released before ownership can be transferred.

  • Lien released directly on the title
  • Or a separate lien release letter from the lender

Without a lien release, Montana will not process the title transfer.

Replacing a Lost or Damaged Montana Title

If your Montana title is lost, stolen, damaged, or voided, you must obtain a replacement title before selling the vehicle.

  • Replacement titles are issued through Montana Motor Vehicle Services
  • All listed owners must sign the application
  • Fees and processing times apply
