Signing Your Maryland Vehicle Title
Maryland title transfers are straightforward as long as the title is filled out cleanly. Use a blue or black ink pen only and make sure your signature exactly matches the name printed on the front of the title.
What Will Cause a Maryland Title to Be Rejected
- Signing in the wrong section of the title
- Using white-out, cross-outs, or written corrections
- Scribbles or strike-throughs
- Signature that does not match the printed name
- Rips, tears, or damaged titles
If a title is rejected, the Maryland MVA will typically require a duplicate title before the vehicle can be transferred.

Vehicles with Multiple Owners
Maryland requires all owners listed on the title to sign when transferring ownership.
- Every owner shown on the front of the title must sign
If one owner is unable to sign, additional documentation may be required by the MVA.
Titles Showing a Lienholder
If a lienholder or bank is listed on the Maryland title, the lien must be released before the vehicle can be transferred.
- Lien release signed directly on the title
- Or a separate lien release letter from the lender
Without a lien release, the title transfer cannot be completed.
Replacing a Lost or Damaged Maryland Title
Maryland requires a valid title to sell a vehicle. If your title is lost, stolen, damaged, or voided, you must obtain a duplicate.
- Duplicate titles are issued by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA)
- Online, mail, and in-person requests are available
- Processing time is typically 5 to 7 business days
- Duplicate title fee is $20
