Louisiana Vehicle Title Guide & FAQs

Louisiana titles have specific signing and notarization requirements. This guide explains exactly where to sign, what can void a title, how to handle liens and duplicates, and what to do after selling your vehicle.

Signing Your Louisiana Vehicle Title

Louisiana titles require extra care. Your title is a legal document, and mistakes can void it. Use a blue or black ink pen only and sign your name exactly as it appears on the title. Louisiana vehicle titles must be notarized, so do not sign until you are in front of a Notary Public.

What Will Void a Louisiana Title

  • Signing the title outside the presence of a Notary
  • Using white-out, correction fluid, or highlighters
  • Cross-outs, scribbles, or writing over mistakes
  • Tears, rips, or damaged titles
  • Signing in the dealer reassignment section (unless you are a licensed dealer)
  • Using pencil or any ink other than blue or black

If any of these issues occur, the Louisiana OMV will usually require a duplicate title before the vehicle can be sold.

Where to Sign a Louisiana Title

Louisiana titles must be notarized. Sign only in the presence of a Notary Public.

On the back of the title, sign in the area labeled “SIGNATURE(S) of Seller(s)”. Print your name directly below where it states “PRINTED NAME(S) of Seller(s)”.

Do not sign anywhere else unless the Louisiana OMV specifically instructs you to do so.

Vehicles with Multiple Owners

If more than one owner appears on the title, the wording between names determines who must sign:

  • Owner 1 OR Owner 2 – only one owner must sign
  • Owner 1 AND Owner 2 – both owners must sign
  • Owner 1 AND/OR Owner 2 – both owners must sign
  • No conjunction listed – both owners must sign

All required signatures must be notarized.

Titles Showing a Lienholder

If a lienholder is listed on your Louisiana title, the lien must be released before the vehicle can be transferred.

  • Lien release noted directly on the title
  • Or a separate lien release letter from the lender

Without a lien release, the OMV will not process the title transfer.

Replacing a Lost or Damaged Louisiana Title

If your Louisiana title is lost, stolen, damaged, or voided, you must obtain a duplicate title before selling the vehicle.

What you’ll need

  • Completed Application for Duplicate or Corrected Title (Form DPSMV 1799)
  • Valid photo identification
  • Lien release documentation (if applicable)
  • Application submitted to the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles

Official duplicate title instructions are available through the Louisiana OMV: https://www.expresslane.org/vehicles/title-and-registration/duplicate-replacement-registrations/

Do I Keep My License Plates?

In Louisiana, license plates generally remain with the owner, not the vehicle. Remove your plates before releasing the vehicle unless the OMV instructs otherwise.
