Kansas Vehicle Title Guide & FAQs

Selling a car in Kansas doesn’t have to be complicated. This guide walks you through exactly where to sign your title, what mistakes can void it, and how to handle duplicate titles and post-sale steps without delays.

Signing Your Kansas Vehicle Title

Kansas title transfers must be completed carefully to avoid rejection. Use a blue or black ink pen only and sign your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title. Do not use white-out, scribble, or correct mistakes.

What Will Get a Kansas Title Rejected

  • Signing in the wrong section of the title
  • Signature not matching the printed owner name
  • White-out, cross-outs, or strike-throughs
  • Writing over mistakes instead of replacing the title
  • Using pencil or marker

If any of these issues occur, the Kansas Department of Revenue will require a duplicate title before the transfer can be completed.

Where to Sign a Kansas Title

Flip the title over and look at the upper section on the back.

  • Sign on the line labeled “Seller’s Signature”
  • Print your name next to or below on the line labeled “Seller’s Hand Printed Name”

Do not sign anywhere else unless instructed by the county treasurer or Kansas DOV.

Vehicles with Multiple Owners

The word connecting owner names on the front of the title determines who must sign:

  • OR – only one owner signature is required
  • AND – all listed owners must sign
  • AND/OR – all listed owners must sign
  • No connector listed – defaults to AND, all owners must sign

When unsure, having all owners sign helps avoid delays.

Titles Showing a Lien or Bank Name

If a lienholder or bank appears on the front of the Kansas title, the lien must be released before ownership can transfer.

  • Lien release noted directly on the title
  • Notarized lien release
  • Completed Form TR-150
  • Official lien release letter from the lender

Without a lien release, the county treasurer will not process the title.

Replacing a Lost or Damaged Kansas Title

If your Kansas title is lost, stolen, damaged, or voided, you must apply for a duplicate title before selling the vehicle.

  • Duplicate titles are processed through the county treasurer’s office
  • Processing time is typically 7–10 business days
  • Duplicate title fee is $10
  • Online duplicate requests are not available

Can I Sell a Car in Kansas Without a Title?

No. Kansas requires a valid vehicle title to sell a car. If the title is missing, a duplicate must be issued before the sale.
