Indiana Vehicle Title Guide & FAQs

Selling a car in Indiana doesn’t need to be complicated. This guide explains exactly where to sign your title, what can cause delays, and how to handle duplicate titles and post-sale BMV steps with confidence.

Signing Your Indiana Vehicle Title

Indiana title transfers are simple when everything is filled out correctly. Use a blue or black ink pen only and sign your name exactly as it appears on the title. No nicknames, no alterations, and no guessing where to sign.

What Will Get an Indiana Title Rejected

  • Signing in the wrong section of the title
  • Signature that does not match the printed name
  • Cross-outs, erasing, or altered information
  • White-out or correction fluid
  • Rips, tears, or damaged titles
  • Tracing over signatures
  • Using pencil or marker instead of ink

If any of these occur, the Indiana BMV will usually require a duplicate title before the vehicle can be transferred.

Where to Sign an Indiana Title

On an Indiana vehicle title, seller signatures are completed on the back of the title. Sign where it is labeled “Signature of Seller.”

Print your name in the section labeled “Printed Name of Seller.” Do not sign anywhere else unless instructed by the Indiana BMV.

Vehicles with Multiple Owners

If more than one owner is listed on the title, the wording between names determines who must sign:

  • AND – all owners must sign
  • / – all owners must sign
  • OR – one owner may sign
  • AND/OR – one or more owners may be required to sign

When in doubt, having all listed owners sign can help avoid delays.

Titles Showing a Lienholder

If a lienholder is listed on the Indiana title, the lien must be released before ownership can be transferred.

  • Lien release noted on the title
  • Or an official lien release document from the lender

Without a lien release, the title transfer cannot be completed.

If the Vehicle Owner Is Deceased

Additional documentation is required if the vehicle owner has passed away.

  • Joint ownership may require a certified death certificate
  • Individual ownership may require:
    • Executor or Administrator paperwork
    • Surviving spouse documentation
    • Other court-authorized documentation

Replacing a Lost or Damaged Indiana Title

If your Indiana title is lost, stolen, damaged, or voided, a duplicate title must be obtained before selling the vehicle.

  • Requests may be submitted online, by mail, or in person
  • Processing times vary depending on submission method

What you’ll need

  • Completed Application for Certificate of Title
  • Valid photo identification
  • Applicable duplicate title fee
  • Submission to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles

Official duplicate title instructions are available on the Indiana BMV website .

After Selling Your Vehicle in Indiana

After completing the sale, there are a few final steps to handle.

  • Remove your license plates before releasing the vehicle
  • Keep a copy of the title and bill of sale for your records

Do I Keep My License Plates?

Yes. Indiana requires sellers to remove their license plates before releasing the vehicle. Plates may be transferred to another vehicle or returned according to Indiana BMV guidelines.
