Signing Your Idaho Vehicle Title
Idaho keeps title transfers fairly straightforward as long as everything is signed correctly. Use a blue or black ink pen and sign your name exactly as it appears on the title. Do not abbreviate, alter, or guess.
What Will Get an Idaho Title Rejected
- Signing in the wrong section
- Signature that does not match the name on the title
- Cross-outs, erasing, or writing over mistakes
- White-out or correction fluid
- Rips, tears, or damaged titles
- Tracing over signatures
- Using pencil or marker instead of ink
If any of these occur, the Idaho DMV will usually require a duplicate title before the vehicle can be transferred.

Where to Sign an Idaho Title
On Idaho titles, signatures are completed on the front of the title.
- Sign where it states “Seller or Representative’s Signature”
- Print your name where it states “Seller’s Printed Name”
Do not sign anywhere else unless specifically instructed by the Idaho DMV.
Vehicles with Multiple Owners
If more than one owner is listed on the title, the wording between the names determines who must sign:
- AND – all listed owners must sign
- / – all listed owners must sign
- OR – only one owner is required to sign
- AND/OR – one or more owners may sign
When in doubt, have all owners sign to avoid delays.
Titles Showing a Lienholder
If a lienholder is listed on the Idaho title, the lien must be released before ownership can be transferred.
- Lien release noted on the title
- Or a separate lien release document from the lender
Without a lien release, the title cannot be transferred.
If the Vehicle Owner Is Deceased
Additional documentation is required when the titled owner has passed away.
- Certified death certificate
- Executor or administrator documentation
- Other probate or legal paperwork required by the Idaho DMV
Replacing a Lost or Damaged Idaho Title
If your Idaho title is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must request a duplicate title before selling.
- Apply through the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD)
- All owners must sign the application
- Valid photo identification is required
Replacement titles may be requested in person or by mail.
More information is available at the Idaho DMV.
After Selling Your Vehicle in Idaho
Once the sale is complete, a few final steps remain.
- Remove your license plates before releasing the vehicle
- Cancel or update your registration as required by Idaho DMV
Do I Keep My License Plates?
Yes. In Idaho, license plates belong to the owner, not the vehicle. Sellers must remove their plates before transferring possession of the car.
