Signing Your Hawaii Vehicle Title
Hawaii keeps title signing very specific, so take your time before putting pen to paper. Use a blue or black ink pen only and sign your name exactly as it appears on the title. No abbreviations, no corrections.
What Will Get a Hawaii Title Rejected
- Signing anywhere other than the seller signature section
- A signature that does not match the name printed on the title
- Cross-outs, erasing, or attempting to correct mistakes
- White-out or correction fluid
- Rips, tears, or damaged titles
- Tracing over a signature
- Using pencil or marker instead of ink
If any of these issues occur, your county office will usually require a duplicate title before the vehicle can be transferred.

Where Do I Sign a Hawaii Title?
Hawaii vehicle titles are signed on the front of the title, in the lower section.
- Sign and print your name in the box labeled “PRINTED NAME AND SIGNATURE OF SELLER.”
- Make sure both the printed name and signature are completed in that same section.
There is only one seller signature area on a Hawaii title, so signing elsewhere can void it.
Can I Sell a Car in Hawaii Without a Title?
No. Hawaii requires a valid vehicle title to sell or transfer ownership.
If your title is lost, stolen, or damaged, you must request a duplicate title through your county’s Vehicle Registration & Licensing office before completing the sale.
