District of Columbia Vehicle Title Guide & FAQs

District of Columbia titles are straightforward once you know the rules. This guide explains exactly where to sign, what can void a title, how to handle duplicate titles, and what to do after selling a vehicle in DC.

District of Columbia Vehicle Title

Where Do I Sign a District of Columbia Title?

To transfer ownership of a vehicle in the District of Columbia, the seller must sign the back of the vehicle title.

  • Sign in the upper left corner where it states “Signature of Seller.”
  • Print your name in the space labeled “Printed Name of Seller.”
  • Use blue or black ink only, and sign your name exactly as it appears on the front of the title.

Do not sign anywhere else on the title unless directed by DC DMV. Incorrect signatures, alterations, or signing in the wrong area may result in delays or require a duplicate title.
